Building effective relationships

"It’s my role to develop and present business insights to our internal sales and Channel Development teams. It’s about creating a bridge between our business objectives and business information – and making sure that our sales department deploys its resources effectively and efficiently. While I’m mostly based in Bristol, I’ll occasionally travel to account meetings, work conferences and field visits across the UK.

Previously I’d worked in Motor Insurance. I wanted to get more involved in the Admin side of things, which I enjoyed the most. Imperial Tobacco offered me a two week temporary contract over one Christmas – and two and a half years later, I’m still here. Since I’ve joined it’s opened up so many different career opportunities; In fact I’ve just been successful in securing a fantastic secondment opportunity to one of our major multiple account customers for 12 months.”

Quick to adapt

“Seeing how my work contributes toward the business really motivates me. You’ll find the same attitude throughout. People here are ambitious and enthusiastic, and they believe in our products. Of course, there are many changes you need to adapt to. Prices of products change regularly and so does legislation. Keeping ahead of it all is essential. You need to adapt quickly, and move faster than the competition.

People at Imperial Tobacco are very approachable at all levels – we’ve an open door policy. You shouldn’t be afraid to challenge the status quo here and voice any ideas to drive the business forward. What’s more, we enjoy some great benefits and a very rewarding pay scheme. I also feel I have good job security here.”

Supporting your progress

“Since joining Imperial Tobacco I’ve attended various courses. For example, I went on a two day Presentation course which gave me the confidence I needed to present to customers. There are also various bite size courses to help you get a better understanding of our many departments. This has helped give me direction in my career.

There are always ways to progress. As well support from your direct manager, the company as a whole will ensure you’re involved in activities that give you experience you need to do new things. This is exactly what I’m doing now. I want to get into a more analytical role, so I am currently working on projects which will help me achieve this.”
