Quick, effective decisions
"I work within the Insights and Business Planning department, providing up to date analysis and insights on market trends and industry developments to aid our management's decision making.
I previously worked for a Group subsidiary, Sinclair Collis, (cigarette vending) but left after seven years to join an IT/computer and laptop sales company. I joined Imperial Tobacco as a Trading Assistant in the Sales Support department and later took on secondments as a UK Reporting & Systems Co-ordinator and Regional Analyst. In October 2009, I was permanently promoted to the role of Commercial Analyst.
Even though the tobacco industry is very well established, the competitive environment is increasingly fierce. We have to both pre-empt and react to moves by other tobacco companies to maintain and extend our leadership position. It is vital that our employees are responsive so as that we maintain our position as No. 1 tobacco manufacturer."
Adaptability: the key to success
"Adaptability is crucial in this industry. However, being adaptable has distinct advantages for those wanting to develop their careers. We don't pigeon-hole employees into areas of 'expertise'. We actively encourage people to experience different areas of the business, widening their understanding of the tobacco industry.
I've been able to explore a wide range of roles through the Imperial Tobacco Group - which is why I decided to return. The amount of opportunities to develop your potential in this company is amazing and so far, I feel I have been making the most of the varied positions I've secured."
A co-operative culture
"The working culture of Imperial is all important. It's a very friendly and co-operative place to work with a real open door policy. No matter how senior someone is, they will always have time to spend with people who are looking to improve themselves and learn more about the company. There are also plenty of opportunities for personal development and for your career to move quickly on - whether this is within the UK or further afield.
In all, it's a great environment for someone who is passionate about their job and is motivated to constantly learn and improve. You'll succeed if you're open and honest, comfortable as part of a team and aware of when to call upon the help and advice of those around you."
